Raise Your Voice Regarding The Proposed Standards for Sex Education and Health

Mar 18, 2021 | Articles, Pastor Brenda Kunneman, Pastor Hank Kunneman

Pastors Hank and Brenda here. Our children and our future are under attack! The school curriculum being introduced in various states is alarming. In the state of Nebraska, there has been an outrageous attempt by political activists through the Nebraska Department of Education to revise the sex education curriculum and health standards within the school system. If it can happen in Nebraska, it can happen in your state as well!  As believers who stand for the Bible, we cannot stay silent at this time.

  • Children as young as first grade would be taught about gender identity and gender stereotypes under draft public-school health standards released by the Nebraska Department of Education.
  • Kindergarteners would be taught about different kinds of family structures, including “cohabitating” and same-gender families.
  • Fourth graders would be taught the difference between sex assigned at birth and gender identity. Fifth graders would be taught that gender expression and gender identity exist along a spectrum.
  • Sixth graders would learn what sexual identity is and learn about a range of identities related to sexual orientation, among them heterosexual, bisexual, lesbian, gay, queer, two-spirit, asexual and pansexual.
  • They would learn the differences between cisgender, transgender, gender non-binary, gender expansive and gender identity.

Governor Ricketts of Nebraska has expressed his opposition to these standards and has asked parents to make their opinion known.  He stated, “I am calling on the Nebraska Department of Education to scrap their proposed sex education topics that are included in their draft health standards. The new standards from the department would not only teach young children age-inappropriate content starting in kindergarten, but also inject non-scientific, political ideas into curriculum standards. The sex education standards represent a significant shift in approach to health education, and many of the new themes are sensitive topics that should be addressed by parents at home and not by schools. The draft standards were developed with the help of political activists, and without the input of key mainstream organizations. I am urging Nebraska parents to speak up now, and to share their reaction with the department, so it can be made a part of the formal record to the full board.”
