Notes from Pastor Doug’s presentation:
WHAT IS HAPPENING TO CHURCHES IN THE UNITED STATES?
Fox News Article from July 6: California Ban on Singing in Church
Outrage after California bans singing in churches amid coronavirus pandemic
California Gov. Gavin Newsom banned singing and chanting in houses of worship during the first week of July along with limiting attendance to 100 people
Liberty Counsel article from July 15: Governor Bans IN-HOME Fellowship Meetings!
Gov. Newsom issued a new edict dictating that about 80 percent of California’s faithful may not gather for any worship, no matter how small the group.
Under California’s latest directive, you can engage in revolutionary riots tearing businesses and neighborhoods apart, but you cannot have a Bible study with your neighbor or friend in your own home!
Big League Politics article from July 11: Churches Report Chicago Officials are Threatening to Bulldoze Their Facilities for Not Complying with COVID-19 Mandates
Churches in Chicago have been threatened by city officials with destruction.
Matt Staver, of Liberty Counsel, said that churches that he represents have received letters from the city’s Board of Health that declared them “public nuisances.”
New York Times article from July 24: Split 5 to 4, Supreme Court Rejects Nevada Church’s Challenge to Shutdown Restrictions.
Calvary Chapel in Dayton, Nevada, filed a lawsuit that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Supreme Court upheld Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak’s directive requiring places of worship to limit attendance to 50 or fewer during worship services; however, casinos, restaurants and amusement parks have been limited to 50 percent of their fire-code capacities.
Justice Neil Gorsuch, in a separate dissenting opinion, noted that there is nothing stopping a movie theater from welcoming in 500 patrons
“Large numbers and close quarters are fine in such places. But churches, synagogues, and mosques are banned from admitting more than 50 worshippers — no matter how large the building…
In Nevada, it seems, it is better to be in entertainment than religion. Maybe that is nothing new,” Gorsuch wrote. “But there is no world in which the Constitution permits Nevada to favor Caesar’s Palace over Calvary Chapel.”
On a bright note, here is one of many California pastors taking a stand:
Washington Times article from August 9: California church defies coronavirus order with indoor service.
On Sunday, Rob McCoy, pastor of Godspeak Calvary Chapel, held church services in violation of a court’s temporary restraining order.
Pastor McCoy encouraged church members to attend the service, warning that the first one thousand of his congregation would likely “win a prize” — a misdemeanor citation that will go on their records.
“I wish it didn’t have to come to this, I really do, but we will be violating the judge’s order,” McCoy announced. “We will be open this Sunday.”
Christian Post article from August 2: Portland rioters burn Bibles outside federal building.
Ian Cheong, managing editor of Human Events, wrote: “Do not be under the illusion that these protests and riots are anything but an attempt to dismantle all of Western Civilization and upend centuries of tradition and freedom of religion.”
WHAT SHOULD OUR RESPONSE BE?
It’s a principle of righteousness that the law of our God is never to be broken to obey human laws.
1 Peter 2:13-14 clearly states that the governmental authorities Peter is describing here recognize the difference between those who do wrong and those who do right. Those leaders in authority punish those who do wrong and commend those who do right.
In other words, the assumption here is that you are living under a government that is using their authority in a Godly manner they punish the wrongdoer and praise those who do right
When this is not the case, and we have a tyrannical leader that is violating God’s law we no longer must obey their directives…we obey God
A believer in Christ has the duty to submit to earthly laws or regulations if they are in harmony with God’s Divine Law.
